The January 2023 edition of Cricket magazine features my short story “Four Things You Hear”! If you don’t have a subscription, you can buy a copy of the magazine here.

In the seventh century, a band of Scythian slavers has raided a Slavic settlement on the Dnieper River, kidnapping autistic 12-year-old Zoia’s brother and several other boys. Fearing retribution from the slavers, her father (the chieftain) determines that the risks to his people are too great to pursue the stolen children. But Zoia isn’t taking ‘no’ for an answer, and when she and a friend sneak away from the village in pursuit of the Scythians, her hyper-alert sensory system might be exactly what’s needed to effect a stealthy rescue mission.
