As a public librarian, I know how tight funding is for schools and libraries. I calculate my rates based on the amount of time it takes me to prepare and present a program or talk, and while I keep my rates as affordable as possible, what my time is worth evolves with the cost of childcare. I live in Albuquerque, New Mexico, so unless I’m already going to be in your region for another reason (conference, book tour, etc.), I also need to charge for travel fare, hotel, and travel time.
